Jorge Eduardo Fernandez was born May 1, 1956, in Santa Clara, Cuba. He fled Cuba with his family when he was six years old. They eventually settled in the Tampa Bay Area.
Jorge graduated from Clearwater Central Catholic High School in 1974. He was a welder by trade and co-owned the Treasures of the Caribbean with his brothers for many years. Most recently he worked at the Meilus Muscular Therapy Clinic.
However, Jorge’s true calling was as a master craftsman. Jorge used his artistic ability to create beautiful handmade wood furniture. He built his projects with careful attention to detail and with loving hands. Jorge left his distinctive mark on everything he touched.
Jorge will always be remembered for his calm and patient demeanor. He was a man of few words, but a great observer of people. When he did comment, he would often share an inciteful perspective that others hadn’t considered.
When Jorge wasn’t woodworking, he enjoyed boating. He was an excellent sailor and even hand made a wooden sailboat, “Mamey”. He also enjoyed cruising the local waterways on his powerboat, “Betsea”.
Besides his artistic talent, Jorge was very musical. For many years, he played drums in a band called the “Hip Replacements”. They met every Thursday night and he looked forward to those evenings of keeping the beat with his friends.
Jorge came from a very close and loving extended family. He had a rare bond with his siblings throughout his entire life and he was fortunate to have a wonderful and supportive wife.
He leaves behind his wife, Sue; his son, Erick; stepdaughter, Ashlee; grandson, Cameron; siblings, Humberto and Yolanda; and many nieces, a nephew, and cousins.
Jorge’s life was cut short by brain cancer. He will be sorely missed and live forever in the hearts of the many friends and family members who loved him.
Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday, November 26, 2021 at the Light of Christ Catholic Church 2176 Marilyn Street, Clearwater, Florida 33765 at 10:30 am.
