Rick Hersey passed away December 2, 2020. Born in 1951 in Tampa, Rick grew up in Tampa and Polk County. Baseball was his early passion, instilling a lifelong interest in many sports. With the guidance of his cousin and mentor, Laverne, Rick formed a strong work ethic. While in high school Rick began his long and successful career in the grocery business. He was proudly promoted to the youngest store manager at Big Star/K-Mart Foods in Tampa. Later, managing Grand Union in St Pete, he met Laura, his future wife of 40 years. He and Laura loved the Smoky Mountains where they spent many years vacationing. Together they shared a special bond providing care and homes for animals in need, keeping many as their own. His favorite cat Peep held a special place in his heart. Rick also enjoyed golfing, boating, fishing, bowling, and spending time with family and friends. In his early retirement he and Laura moved to Tennessee for a few years before returning to Florida to be with family and friends. Rick was predeceased by his mother Nita Strickland and mother-in-law Irene Smith. He leaves behind his wife Laura; cousins Laverne (Pat) and Diane (Robert); in-laws Becki, Mike and Lesley, niece Solae; and longtime friend Tracy, whom he loved like a brother. Rick did not wish to have a formal service. Please remember him fondly.
