Obituary of Victor Lowell Bonat
Victor Lowell Bonat, age 80, of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away peacefully on
November 11, 2019 in his home. Victor was born on April 29th, 1939 to Victor and Ede
Anderson Bonat (Brandon) in Wichita, Kansas. Victor attended St. Mary’s High School,
Kapaun High School, and Georgetown University for one year before joining the US
Navy. Victor begged Barbara Josephine Ludwig to marry him and finally she consented
on January 4, 1964. They would have 54 years of love and companionship together. After
being honorably discharged, he worked with his friends and founders of the first Pizza
Hut where he became one of the original franchisees. After franchising Pizza Hut in the
DC area and Mexico, and Wyoming ; Victor was the consummate entrepreneur, owning a
BBQ restaurant, assisted living homes, a home warranty business and other ventures.
He was a devoted Catholic, completing Education for Parish Service, taught CCD, joined
the Knights of Columbus, and was Eucharistic Minister. He ran his businesses in a
Catholic manner, offering loans, providing down payments and other assistance for his
employees in need. Victor also served on the boards of International Pizza Hut
Franchisee Association and Gunston School.
A king of the one-liner and non sequitur, he had many friends he was devoted to
including Marcus Clark, Jerry Aaron, Dan Shedrick and Jack Shelton. He was an avid
hunter, sailor and fisherman and enjoyed being with his children. Victor and Barbara
lived an adventurous life of travel, a sojourn on the water on the Eastern Shore of
Maryland and an extended adventure in their Airstream trailer with their dogs Mac and
Tanner. They ultimately retired to St. Petersburg, FL.
Victor is survived by his loving wife, Barbara, and children, Gretchen Haddad and
husband, Joseph Haddad, Christian Bonat and wife Dr. Sandra Bonat, Trevor Bonat and
wife Stephanie Bonat, grand children Alexandra, Abigail, Elizabeth, Lucia and Jane, and
his siblings, Janice Eve Bonat, Frank Philip Bonat, James Paul Bonat, and Gregory Myler
Bonat. Cousins Steve and Ann Smith and Monty Smith. Sisters-in-law: Bary Anne Davis (James G.), Sara and Joe Stejskal; many nephews and nieces.
Fr. Emery will preside at a mass to celebrate his life with a Holy Mass on November 18 at
Holy Cross Catholic Church 7851 54 Ave N. There will be a reception and light luncheon after
services at The Church Hall. His interment will be at the Veterans Administration Cemetery, Bay Pines, FL at 2 pm. A second reception will be planned on his birthday in Virginia in the spring.
